"D-Don't move, sweetheart. I'll get help. You just stay here with me, okay?" He gently brushed his fingers near blood-matted fuzz on her face. His eyes stung a bit but he took a deep breath. He reached for his cell and called 911.

He reached down and gently grabbed one of Angel's hands with his free hand. If he had a hold of her, she couldn't slip away. It seemed like forever for the phone to ring and someone answer.

"Hello? Please help. They attacked my girlfriend. They beat her bad. I jumped in to help, but I wasn't here early enough. Please." It took a moment for the 911 operator to get him calmed enough to get the information to send police and an ambulance.
