A Little Wining and Dining Never Hurt, Did It? (New Mutants)

Being cast out of the hallways of power of Shaw Industries had a considerable freeing effect on Stephanie's normally claustrophobic schedule, but perhaps too much so, for there were times when Marcelo was away for work or patrolling, with school out of session and most of her affairs with the mutant shelter and surrounding properties more or less running themselves, that she found a peculiar sensation. It manifested alternately in lassitude (at least to a degree native to her) and in frenzied efforts to find activity worthy of her time. It was a most unfamiliar and unpleasant sensation.

To wit, Stephanie was kind of bored.

There were other things working at her, however. While she worked very hard to keep herself in top condition, the plain fact of it was that there was only so much training she could do herself. Was she capable in a fight? Yes, against opponents of weaker constitution than she, which in truth had been most of the fighting she'd ever done. But what if she had to one day defend herself against a foe of equal or greater strength?

What if she had to fight her father one day? She wasn't a fool, she was quite sure she'd lose that particular struggle by herself.

Stephanie had skills she needed to develop further.

There was something else. Along with the generalized feeling of boredom, there was a particular sort of mostly psychological need. She didn't get to use her powers often enough. It felt like intentionally suppressing part of her deepest psyche.

Stephanie craved an excuse to use her mutant powers. To be a mutant, to inhabit that role more fully. She spent much of her time advocating for mutants and assisting them, but there was a primal need to use and develop her power that wasn't being satisfied.

These were some of the reasons why she'd extended the invitation to her former classmates, who were currently a superhero team of sorts.

It would have been just as easy for Stephanie simply to have come and seen them, but that wasn't really her style. After all, it was a class reunion of sorts and it deserved to be held in a pleasant atmosphere. And when it came to congenial atmospheres, there really wasn't any better than La Navarra. And even more congenially, she was now its owner. Which made booking a private room much easier- not that she'd had any difficulty in the past, when she was merely the restaurant's best customer.

And really, if she was going to be working with them, why not start out on a pleasant, mutually agreeable and frankly impressive basis?

Having sent the invitation, Stephanie settled into the private room she'd booked at the restaurant, There wasn't anything to do but to wait for them to arrive.
