Who Will Defend Us?

The portal from Limbo opened easily and without triggering the wards that warned those mystically sensitive of what was happening in the city.  S'ym's erstwhile ally had seen to that.  Not that S'ym trusted him further than he could throw him, but he had been truthful enough in what he could provide. 

Other demons, made temporarily invisible, followed him out of the portal.

"You all know S'ym's plan," he said.  "Raise hell out there.  Make the humans panic.  The more chaos we sow, the weaker our ally makes the barrier between dimensions.  And when that happens, he says this world will belong to S'ym!  And what's good for S'ym is good for all of you!"

The demons began to cheer.

S'ym puffed on his cigar.  "But it's gonna take all of you doin' what we do best.  Killin' folks, corruptin' this world, just like we done before.  Only there ain't no X-Men here to stop us this time!  No little Darkchylde to ruin things!  This time... this world... will... be... OURS!"

The demons flew off, ready to raise hell.

"Thanks," Dawn said. She immediately leaned against the nearest structure--a mailbox--and began to hyperventilate.

"S'ym? Purpley-grey guy? Has a horn? Sometimes sports a vest? Refugee from Limbo? That S'ym?" Yeah, the guy's name definitely piqued Sofia's interest. Sofia tightened her grip. "Speak now or forever lose your peace, demonling."

The demon looked rather... stressed for a moment, weighing the possibility of S'ym killing him later compared to Sophia killing him right now.

"...He's in Central Park."

"..." Sofia pursed her lips thoughtfully.

And then she formed a leash and collar made of magic, latching it around the demonling's neck.

"C'mon, squirt. You're leading me to him."

"Only in the water and usually only against things like kraken. And I'm not short."

Kassi deflected most of the glass and metal spray before turning her trident on a rogue parking meter.

"I'm guessing you're Southern."

"Yep. From Missouri. I saw a trident like that in The Little Mermaid." Tommy said, taking aim at another parking meter.

"I don't suppose you're an actual Mermaiden? I mean, you have to hang out in the water, right?" he asked, popping off the next shot.

"...this is embarrassing."

One by one, the demonic objects fell under the duo's attacks. But there were still more of them.

Marion smirks at Frankie's enthusiastic sounds. She doesn't blame the other girl. Fighting is actually pretty fun. That is at least what she has started to think ever since she became a werewolf.

"Good!"

Sofia reached down and gently rubbed her knuckles over its craggy yet soft head. "I know. But this is infinitely more fun than vanquishing you."

The demon cursed in some demonic language, but started walking.

Central Park

The demon led Sophia to Central Park, where mystical barriers were currently keeping everyone else out.

The magic there was strong. It pricked Sofia's skin and tugged at her insides the closer that they got to Central Park. The demonling kept on muttering in its own language, and for the most part, Sofia let it. Dogs barked, cats purred, demonlings muttered in failed defiance. It was a thing.

"So, what's S'ym planning? An ascension? An apocalypse? A quinceanera?"

The demon shrugged. "I dunno! He doesn't share this kinda stuff. Just said he had some new ally..."

The numbers were wearing thin now, but the few that remained were still going strong.

"Pretty much rules out the quinceanera, then," Sofia muttered. "He say anything about this ally? Powers, name, favourite colour M&M?"

"Really? Do I look like the kind of demon he tells things too?"

"I'm a mermaid, but I don't have to to always be in the water."

Kassi smacked a trash can.

"No. But you also look like the kind of demonling that is paid so little attention that he could be a proverbial fly on a wall. Hear anything useful that was going on, without any really important people realizing that they were being eavesdropped on." She yanked on the leash a little bit. "So. Have you heard anything?"

"Ack! Ack!" the demon choked. "Hey, okay, okay! Easy on the neck!"

He spat on the ground. "I maybe heard something about some kind of... Dark Dimension? Something about a mumu?"

"..." Sofia blinked and stared at the demon. "Answer this question correctly, and you get to live. As my pet."

The power thrummed from the park, still prickling at Sofia.

"Did the mumu have anything to do with, I don't know. A door? Did it possibly sound like Dormammu?"

There was rapid nodding. "Oh yeah!" the demon said. "That was it! Knew it was something like that!"

There was another prolonged moment of silence from Sofia before she let out a string of curses. "Of course my great-uncle would be behind this! Because why not?"

"So..." the demon ventured. "What're you gonna do?"

"Pull out the barbecue, get some blackberry lemonade, and throw an old-fashioned family reunion," Sofia said dryly. "What do you think I'm going to - - do you even have a name?" She needed a plan, fast, beyond witty banter.
