A Gift Of Blood And Steel (Open to Mansion Folk)

WHO: Stephanie Shaw, Others
WHAT: Stephanie Shaw is taken by Vargas and left out for the people at the Mansion to find.
WHERE: The Mansion gate
WHEN: Early morning
WARNING: Description of trauma and violence.

Stephanie Shaw had called a press conference with as many media outlets as she could access- while it was nominally to clear the air about her legal situation involving Shaw Industries, many wags suspected that she would be admitting to being a mutant like her brother. No doubt it would have been a very dignified moment, well-rehearsed and delivered with equal measures of honesty and tact. Vargas had actually taken the speech off of her. It was impressive enough and had she been able to say those words on a wide stage, they may have had some impact.

She'd never got to the presentation to deliver her message. Vargas had seen to that with his men. A toxin, administered with minimal force through a mere scratch from his blade had removed her mutant powers temporarily, leaving her effectively helpless. Ironic that a woman that could have survived a fall from the top floor of the Empire State Building would be so vulnerable to such a slight wound. But he knew her fiendish powers well, had seen them at that party. Taking her was not difficult. The driver and the attendant had to be slain, but their deaths were quick, virtually painless. It was up to God to judge them now.

He'd made sure she was conscious as far as he could, for the process of making her a suitable gift for her alma mater. She'd tried her best to be defiant, but she was too used to shallow scrapes and minor bruises to be at all prepared for the sensation of dislocation, of cutting. It was important that she be left alive, so he could not use his blade too liberally- and it was unsuitable to engage in dismemberment, as it was difficult to say how long she would be obliged to remain alive from the time she was deposited and the time she was discovered. She'd finally gone unconscious of course, and it would be easier to transport her thus.

Shinobi had said to kill her, of course, but Vargas cared not for his commandments. He had been useful in showing the way to her, no more and no less. He expected that Shinobi's boy would come to kill him and that suited him just fine. This was a holy crusade. He had been chosen as a champion, to show humanity that the mutants could be torn down, defeated.

Dislocated limbs were easier to work into the grill of the gates, a sign stating "The First Among Many" in Latin affixed to the gate above her. She was bloodied, bruised, unconscious and in serious need of medical attention, but she would survive for at least the few hours that would likely elapse between then and the time she was discovered. Twisted bits of metal were made into manacles holding her in place. He'd dressed her in white wrappings, which would slowly turn to crimson as blood seeped. And with that, he left.

"We don't have his name yet. Stephanie will be able to give us more information when she's out of surgery and coherent. I have information I got from readings off the gate and the sign he had put on Stephanie." Rachel paused. She gave Brooke a level look.

"I understand what you're feeling. But you will not be going with the X-Men. You're too emotionally close to this, and Stephanie will need you when she wakes."

Brooke raised an eyebrow. "I'm more than happy to stay back and make sure that Stephanie has a friendly face to open her eyes to," she said. "And believe me, I want to be there for her. But I have to ask, do you want me to stay back only because I'm too close to this, or are you worried that I'll let my inner sociopath shine through and do something terrible to the monster that made my best friend a victim?"

"No, Brooke. The primary reason is you're too close to this. The secondary one has more to do with your field rating and non-affiliation with the X-Men than it does with any diagnosis I make. Recent events on school grounds have made it clear to us we need to be more stringent with who we let go on missions or practice for missions."

Rachel was serene about the whole thing. Mostly for two reasons: she would not be baited by Brooke and she was in telepathic contact with the team assembling to track down the man who had hurt their student.

Brooke listened carefully. She raised her chin in defiance and attempted to stare Rachel down.

A moment later, she lowered her gaze and blinked back tears.

"Just find the monster that did this and bring him to justice, okay? Stephanie's too good a person to have deserved something like this."

"We will, Brooke," she promised. "We won't stop until we do."

Rachel got up from sitting on the edge of her desk. She plucked a tissue out of the box on her desktop. Then she offered it to the teary-eyed woman.

Brooke accepted the facial tissue and gently dabbed at her eyes with it.

She was grateful that it was the good kind of tissue. Who knows what sort of havoc would have been wreaked on her skin had it been the bad, generic sort?

"Maybe she should move back into the Mansion, so that she can be kept safe."

Also, so that she wouldn't be living with Marcelo.

Rachel was glad her Puffs Plus passed Brooke's muster. Except not really. Ray just had them around for tear-eyed moments which she got a lot of in a school full of teenagers. Though the redhead did raise an eyebrow at what Brooke said.

"That will be a call Stephanie will have to make once she's better. She'll at least be here until she gains some mobility back."

"It's just a thought," Brooke said. "Is there anything I can do from here, though? Play command center? Do research? Use Cerebra to amplify my emotions and seek these jerks out?"

"Jerk, Brooke. This wasn't done to Stephanie by an army. It was done by one very powerful man." Rachel took in a deep breath. She personally did not like the idea of Brooke playing with advanced machinery that did not work the way she thought it did.

"Thank you for the offer of assistance, but you're needed in the Infirmary. Stephanie's coming out of surgery."

"Alright." Brooke gently rose from her seat and walked over to the side of Rachel's desk, gingerly dropping the crumpled up facial tissue into the bin. She started for the door, stopped, and turned back to look at Rachel. "One of these days, Rachel, you're going to have to trust me. Trust me not to betray you guys, and trust me to do the right thing. I understand your reservations, and believe me, I know that I'm needed here at Stephanie's side, but maybe I'm not as evil as everyone here believes me to be." She picked her clutch up and nodded at Rachel. "Enjoy the cookies. I brought them fresh from Italy." She smiled thinly at Rachel before exiting the telepath's office and heading for the garden. Perhaps Stephanie might appreciate some freshly picked flowers.
