Long Overdue
Luíz Adriano Alencar da Silva was visiting New York City once again. It had been a long time since his last visit, but this visit was a bit more personal than business. He hadn't seen his son in awhile, and there were things he needed to look into about his son. Particularly this woman he had been dating.
The flight in had been long, and though he was greeted warmly by his son, he was getting too old to spring right into action after a flight. Luíz begged off meeting Stephanie until he was more presentable.
Before a quick nap and exercises in the hotel's gym, Luíz used his pull and influence to get a nice, quiet table for three at Eleven Madison Park. He sent the time for Marcelo and his girlfriend to meet him and got ready.
He tried to be a little early, so he could watch how his son and his girlfriend interacted as they approached. Over two years with one woman was certainly a record for his son. That he had not proposed marriage was slightly worrying to the Brazilian father considering the last relationship before Marcelo left for the States. For now, Luíz needed to meet and learn.
Then he would start asking questions.

Then he would start asking questions.

"It's hard to believe that I haven't met him yet, you know. We've been together for quite a long time." It occurred to her that he hadn't really met her father either, though she had to admit that she was slightly dreading that meeting. They would cross that bridge when they got to it, though. "Is there anything I should know about him?"
no subject
"That's probably why he took matters into his own hands and made a visit I couldn't refuse." His grin was a little tight. Though at least her first meeting with his papai wasn't at his funeral. "Take all my good traits and bleach them lighter. Better hair. Never remarried after my mother ...died. Uhm, doesn't know my big secret. That kind of stuff, right?"
no subject
"So no polite tableside banter about your newest upgrades. I'm expecting he will ask us about our lack of marriage." Even though by her reckoning, it really wasn't that unusual that they weren't married. They'd been together for a little over two years, not including the time they'd parted. She had an appointment to see the traders in the District, she remembered.

Even though he didn't have the problems Stephanie did with her father, Marcelo's father still had plenty of sway in his life. His approval of Stephanie was vastly important.
"Well, you could. He thinks I fund and supply for it, not that I am it." He scratched his eyebrow. "Very likely considering my history at home. Congratulations on lasting the longest."

"I think it's best not to be mentioning certain Brazilian flying mammals at all in a public place, don't you?" She seemed downright chipper. It was almost fun, pretending that her joints didn't hurt and that she was deeply concerned about her future. But she wanted to impress Marcelo's father so Marcelo would have one less thing to worry about.
"And nobody will be besting my record."

He swallowed a bit when the restaurant came into view. "That seems best, but it'll come up sometime. Possibly when he drops in at the penthouse for an unexpected visit." He glanced at Stephanie with a grin. "If you were anyone else, I'd take that as a threat."

"He knows you make me very happy. Also, whatever he could find on the internet about you. Actual news articles. I don't think he reads gossip columns. Though we'll find out if he does if he asks why you dumped Brooke to come back to me." He grinned.

"I'm going to have to pay much more attention to Chilean wines, I believe." She smiled slightly at the two men. It had probably become clear that, among other things, her appetite was larger than either of them. Another small wrinkle of her mutation, if Mr. da Silva was keeping score.

He was very curious about this relationship. Particularly as he was aware the last serious relationship Marcelo had ended rather abruptly. Which reminded him...
"Ah. Marcelinho, I saw Helena recently. She was on the plane here to the States."

He closed his eyes and put the back of his hand under his nose to make sure he wasn't leaking the good stuff out his nostrils. When he felt safe after a second, he blinked open his eyes and dropped his hand.
"Helena? What's she doing here in America?" He hoped desperately it was just for a short vacation. In California.

Well, he hadn't intended to cause problems, but if his son hadn't told his long-standing girlfriend about Helena, Marcelo deserved it. As it was, he was going to leave the explanations about who she was to Marcelo.
"She said she was coming to New York to check grad schools and had some business to attend to for her job. She graduated from college and is working for one of our competitors, I think."
no subject
Marcelo rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh. Yes. Helena was the last relationship I had before leaving Brazil."
Anymore explanation might ruin the meal with all those courses left to go. "I can tell you about her when we get home?"

"After we get done eating, I think I'll go back to the hotel. I'm not completely over this jetlag."

"Helena. Who was she?" Stephanie glared at him. "You told me all the other women were insignificant."

He really wanted something to drink when he got home. All the wine with dinner was not helping as much as he wished. He let out a deep breath.
"Helena was a naive mistake. Which is to say she was my fiancee before I broke up with her and moved to America."
no subject
"Don't you think that is a thing you should have told me at some point?!" Her lips drew tight. "So was the naive mistake before or after you asked her to marry you?"
no subject
He dropped his hand away from his face. He ignored what he assumed was the rhetorical angry question and when toward the latter one. "The naive mistake was thinking I should have asked her. She was the jewel of her father's eye, and her father is one of the drug lords I directly work against. Which I didn't find out until after we were engaged. So before to answer you."
no subject
"So what about me and my father, Marcelo?" There was steely anger in her face, but also real anxiety.
no subject
"Is your father going into the Brazilian drug trade? He going to put bounties on my head to have it on his desk as an ornament? Are you so loyal to your father that you'd would let him do that? Because as much as I dislike your father after his resurrection, return, or whatever, I don't see you as a threat to my life."
no subject
"I am angry that you never told me about this. But I can swear to you that Father will do no such thing." She looked at him, less glaring at him now than stating ironbound determination. "You're mine, and I am yours. And he will have to deal with that, because if he cannot, I will have no dealings with him."
She sighed, coming down to a more vulnerable place for a moment. "Part of it is that ... I knew I wasn't the first. I expected that, I'm okay with that. But the engagement ..." She didn't quite finish the sentence. "I'd hoped, maybe, sometime, that could have been a first."
no subject
"You the first person I've told my secret identity to." On purpose. He had made a huge mistake one.
"You're the first woman to be with me longer than a year." Which might have told Stephanie how long he had been with Helena, but he pressed on.
"You're the first to move in with me. You're the first woman I love with with all my heart. You've got plenty of important things outside of..." It was here his brain caught up to what Stephanie had been getting at. It caught up and sputtered into silence. So, too, did his mouth.
