Sunset

Dolemeck had become more active at the mansion since he got there. He had begun swimming with the help of his powers and trusted friends, and had worked on his sewing when he had time to himself. There were so many possibilities at this mansion, many he never thought possible. It was like the world was now his oyster.

That said, Dolemeck decided to take the time to watch the sun set over the lake on the mansion grounds. His leg braces were off to the side, resting up against the boat house, while his feet dangled off the dock. He took in the sight of the sky starting to change from light blue, to a darker blue, and then a fiery mix of orange and pink.

Out of the corner of his eye, he could see someone walking up to the dock he sat on. He turned his head and just smiled to the person, giving a small wave, before going back to looking up at the sky.

He grinned a little, closing his eyes for a moment as he goes into a coughing fit. It takes a bit, but he calms down enough to speak, again.

"I was too busy trying to keep up with everyone here, Rose. I never asked anyone if they could slow down for me or accommodate me. I just pushed myself to the breaking point, because I wanted to be able to be included in things. It took me nearly drowning, and for an adult to be a parent to me before I realized it. Kind of sad, huh?"

Rose shook her head. "Yer a teenager, English. We're suppose ta think we're invincible. Even when we're not."

"But I know I am not invincible, Rose." He sighed, resting a hand behind his head. "Getting hit by a car solidified that for me three years ago. The problem is that since I started to feel more powerful, I was using my powers to compensate for the inability to walk, run, and swim. It was too fast, too soon, and I was too stubborn to see that."

For a moment, he blinked back some tears.

"I was an idiot."

"...If yer waitin' fer me ta disagree, yer gonna be waitin' a long time," Rose said.

"But yer our idjit."

"I was agreeing with you, luv." Dolemeck sighed, his eyes closing. "My leg braces are shot, Rose. And even if they were not, I lost feeling in me legs. I knew that would happen at some point in me life, but I never imagined so soon. Well, it was good while it lasted, aye?"

Rose frowned. "Hey now, don' go being such a downer already... Ya don't know what they can do fer ya..."

"It's too risky, Rose. I would need my brother's permission, and Headmistress Ramsey said such surgeries have grave risks. It could work, it might not work, or it could make me worse off than I am now." He gave out a long sigh. "It made me think long and hard about things. It's not worth the risk of being in even more pain than I am now, or being in even worse condition than I am now. I have to accept this is how my life will be, and it is a part of me."

He finally started to smile again.

"You know, Professor Ramsey told me "I may not be able to run across the 500 meter dash, but maybe one day I could fly it". I honestly did not get what he said at first, and then it hit me. If I cannot walk, I can learn to fly, or get one of those racing wheelchairs and cross that line with it. Just because I am different than everyone else, does not mean I cannot cross the same line. I just need to do it differently."

"Sure," Rose said. "The Prof. had a Shi'ar hoverchair fer a while. Maybe somethin' like that."

"A hoverchair?" He raised an eyebrow. "Really? They have something like that here?"

Dolemeck thought for a moment, before laughing.

"I think I want to try and use one of those racing wheelchairs. Keep me upper body in shape. Do not want my manly muscles to disappear, now." He flexed his arm, which was still kind of scrawny looking. He just wanted Rose to laugh or smile... something.

Okay, that got her snickering for a moment.

"Don' quit yer dayjob, English."

"Is that a smile I see? Been awhile since I seen that! Was starting to worry you forgot how to smile, Rose." He calmed his laughing, before resting his arms back down on the bed. "I will not lie, it is good to see you Rose. Even if you are calling me an "idiot". You have been missed around here, luv."

"Yeah, well..." Rose trailed off. "Got a lot of stuff to work out."

"Rose, you told me we're family." He continued to smile, despite the fact his pain medication was kicking in. "Do not forget that. We're here for you, just as you are here for me."

She nodded. "I know, English. I know. An' when I'm ready, I'll talk."

"Good. We'll be here when you are ready, luv." His eyes finally shut and he was out. The poor guy was in a nice slumber, now, and just like in Bobbi's sketches of him, Dolemeck looked very peaceful in his sleep.

She smiled just a little. "Rest up, English. You'll give 'em hell one of these days."
