Road Trip (Brianna)
Halifax, Nova Scotia wasn't home. Home was two whole time zones away, and about as far away from a sea as any place on Earth could be. It, was, however, Canada, and that meant something. People who understood all her ridiculous Canadianisms- the radio stations had started playing Sam Roberts and the Hip and Billy Talent. This also probably meant her girlfriend had to put up with a lot of carseat karaoke, because there was no way that Kayla wasn't singing along to the familiar songs on the radio.
And once they'd stowed the car away safely at the hotel, well, the city was their oyster. The sun was shining (thankfully the fickle Maritime weather had chosen to be kind to them), the sea was sending a gentle breeze over, there were all sorts of quirky little shops down the main strip and better yet, legal age was 19, so Kayla could get a beer with her fish and chips like a civilized person if she chose. The vibe was a lot more chill than New York, people were more relaxed and seemed to be out mostly to have a good time.
Kayla felt like a completely different person than she had a few weeks ago. She still had a few odd quirks- she hit that candy store a few blocks down pretty hard (Bobbi) and every once in awhile she'd end up sounding like Brianna when she spoke. She'd gone from having absolutely no motivation for anything right back to being the ball of restless energy she usually was.
"So we've got that concert tonight, starts at 8 pm, goes on till like midnight, but we've got a free hand until then." She grinned, looking around at all the people going about. "So what do you want to do? We could go tromping up to the Citadel, or go on one of those brewery tours, or check out the harbour." She grinned. "I'm good for everything."

Brianna wore blue skinny jeans, a black top and Chuck Taylors, looking as American as she could (or as American as any Englishwoman could fake) and smiled at Kayla's ideas.
"Brewery tour. I have this urge to drink a gallon of beer, eat a ton of bar food and then take advantage of you." she grinned.
"Then maybe we can check out the harbour."

There was a cool breeze from the sea, so Kayla had decided to give in and wear the leather jacket she'd got a few days ago, paired with a House Stark tank top, and black jeans. She probably looked like she should be riding a motorcycle instead of a car, but it felt comfortable. And her.
"You're talking my language. Though I dunno who'd be taking advantage of whom." Kayla grinned broadly, stealing another kiss. "The Alexander Keith's brewery isn't far from here. We could start there."

They made the walk to the brewery hand-in-hand. They entered and got a few looks but no one said anything. Already better than a lot of things back home.
"How are you feeling?" Brianna asked, for what was probably the sixth time today.
no subject
Kayla was pretty sure that the people who were looking were admiring the view, rather than expressing any sort of disapproval. No doubt as they got to the end, into a bar and drinking, there'd be at least one stupid bro demanding that they kiss. If they'd only display the patience to wait it out, they'd probably get to see some anyway.
But drunken frat boys never had that kind of patience. They were gross like that.
"Like I could conquer the world. And then subscribe to your newsletter atop the smouldering ashes. That and drink some serious beer." She bumped Brianna's hip gently with her own. Very gently, really, because otherwise she could send the poor girl flying.
"I'm good, is what I'm trying to say." Her smile turned into an incandescent grin.

Why was she so bloody beautiful? She said the nerdiest things and Brianna's heart fluttered and her knees when weak at the idea of her newsletter being subscribed to. That would never sound hot coming from anyone else. In fact, it would be creepy as all get out.
The hip check made smile, especially because Kayla was gentle with her. She never worried that Kayla would forget her strength. Brianna often wished she was stronger so that Kayla didn't have to hold back.
Just then her phone beeped.
I have information. Do you have payment?
Brianna replied.
Yes.
She put the phone away and turned her attention back to Kayla.
"Good. I missed that light in your eyes."
no subject
Kayla herself sometimes worried about it a little bit, not so much in situations like that, but when inhibitions were a bit lower. But so far, nothing awful had happened, and her control was only improving.
When Brianna's phone beeped, Kayla didn't think much of it. It was probably one of the girls from the Mansion, or her Mom or something. It wasn't as if she hadn't got any texts while they were gone, largely from Bobbi. Rose wasn't as much into the whole technology scene.
She smiled a little more softly, but completely sincerely. "I missed having it, and now I can appreciate the light in yours."
no subject
That monster had to pay.
Brianna would see to that.
"Sweet-talker. Dinner now. I plan to gorge myself on dessert, too. What's good here?" Brianna asked, picking up a menu with one hand even as he laced the fingers of her other hand with Kayla's.
Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
Kayla was too busy at the moment, enjoying being alive and feeling alive, to have really processed all that. Needless to say, she had no suspicions about what was going on with Brianna.
"We're at a seaside restaurant. Definitely going with seafood. Fish and chips would be the classic, but this seafood linguine looks super good, actually." Kayla gestured over at the harbour behind them. "Anything that came out of there is gonna be pretty good. Also, the lobster roll."
Re: Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
"The first day of the rest of our lives is off to a great start, wouldn't you say?"
Re: Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
"It's off to an awesome start." She leaned over to kiss Brianna's cheek, practically beaming. "Thank you. For being here, for staying around. Means a lot."

Re: Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
"So ... if we're doing lobster rolls, I'm definitely thinking beer, not wine. And look at this. A list of beers from local microbreweries." Kayla grinned.
"So the question is, do you feel like India Pale Ale or more of a stout?"
Re: Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
"I...don't know the difference between a Pale Ale or a stout. The only beer I've ever had was the stuff Rose managed to nick from Logan once a long time ago. And I had three sips before Competitive Brianna showed up." she said.
"What's better?"
Re: Two weeks later (my LIFE lately ....)
India Pale Ale is great, but it's pretty hoppy. You've got to like the flavour of hops to dig it. Alexander Keith's is technically called an IPA, but it's not really. So all that Keith's we've had on our way? Not really a thing.
Stout? Guinness is sort of the archetypical stout. It's heavy, rich, almost ... well, they say Guinness is the beer that eats like a meal. It's really good if you're into an intense roasted grain flavour."
Kayla could wax poetic about beer for ages. "Me? This is summer, and I'm leaning more towards IPA, personally."
