Date Night (Brianna)
There were certain things about going on a date with your roommate that were a little odd. The first thing was that if you planned to surprise your date with anything, it really had to be stashed with a third party, since it was hard to smuggle something like flowers into one's room without one's roommate noticing. The other thing was that Kayla had found herself "borrowing" the floor washroom to get ready, not that there was a lot to do, really- she usually wore only a little makeup and a burgerplace and then dancing at a coffeehouse didn't really call for fancy dress- though she'd dug her best pair of dark jeans from storage and actually bought herself a new top.
No sir, no ratty fandom or band T-shirts for Miss LeBeau. She'd even got a couple of pieces of jewelry, little stud earrings and a birthstone pendant she'd kept from earlier days. She looked fondly at her favorite pair of boots, but it was pretty warm- sandal weather. It felt a little odd to be fussing over herself. And then it came into her mind again that she had a date. Nobody had ever really asked her on a proper date before. She'd kinda sorta had a boyfriend once, but it wasn't really much worth remembering. This was different. There'd be ... okay, not probably candlelight at a burger place, but still, there'd be door opening and dancing and oh god maybe even a goodnight kiss. Hopefully.
And then, they'd go to bed. Ten feet from each other. Which was going to get very interesting very fast if things went well. And that just released a ton of butterflies.
Having finished fussing over herself like she was some kind of girl getting ready for a date or something, she took flowers in her hand and walked downstairs to where they'd agreed they'd meet before walking over to AwesomeBurger for dinner. She was a few minutes early, so she bounced on the balls of her feet slightly, casting a glance upstairs every once in awhile, waiting for Brianna to come down.

"The food here looks wonderful. I can't wait." she said.
"I'm really glad you said yes to me. To tonight, I mean. I didn't really deserve it but you've been really good to me since I came here. It's part of why I like you so much. Even with all of the crappy things that you've dealt with you're still a good person. You haven't let it take that away from you." Briana said.
"Not everyone is that brave. I admire that."
no subject
"It's pretty amazing." Kayla grinned, and then she heard Brianna speak and she swore she felt herself melt a little bit at it. She reached back out to take Brianna's hand, feeling it was important.
"It's easy to be good to you, because you're awesome. And you've been through a lot too. I'm just, it's really great to see you happy, you know? I was worried after everything that had happened. And if I did that, well, I don't regret a damn thing." Her soft smile turned into a smirk.
"But seriously, it's food time."

"I'm still worried about my powers, though. If they don't go back to normal, it's going to take me awhile to adjust and learn them again. And if something happens, I wouldn't be able to help out until I had myself under control." she said.
Brianna's musings were interrupted as the food was brought to their table. The waiter smiled a both ladies warmly as he put down their orders and then asked them if they needed anything else.
"I'm fine, thank you." Brianna said as she looked to Kayla.
no subject
"We've pretty much all got our things that we need to work on. My powers, I don't really have trouble with them firing when I don't want them to, but my control is really crap when they do. Which is bad, because there's a difference between a knockout punch and a mini-Hiroshima.
It'll be fine. Doc McCoy and the others will figure stuff out from their end, and you'll do it from your end. You're not alone with that." She reached out again to give Brianna's hand a squeeze.

Brianna restrained herself from inhaling her cheeseburger but she'd been so nervous about tonight that she'd eaten only sparingly.
Still, she finished her food pretty quickly and sipped her shake slowly as she watched Kayla eat...which was somewhat entrancing. If Kayla looked at her, Brianna would find another place in the room to look though she did so with a grin on her face. She was starting to relax a bit more.
"How about that dancing? Or...do you want to do something else?"
no subject
"Dancing? Oh hell yes. Unless you had something else in mind." Kayla's grin turned positively incandescent. "Gotta admit, I'm kinda looking forward to seeing your moves." And hands. Dancing tended to be a close-contact business.

She stood up from her chair and extended an arm to Kayla.
"Yes, I'd love to dance with you. Let's pay and get out of here."

Once they got into the door, Kayla immediately took Brianna by the hands and gave her best "come hither" look as she "dragged" Brianna onto the dance floor, letting the rhythm start to sway her hips a little as she did so.

Brianna's hips moved with fluid grace as though dancing were as natural to her as walking or breathing. She pulled as close to Kayla as she dared and danced, drawing an envious look from a few of the guys there who probably would have liked to be a part of their circle.
"This was a wonderful idea. You should date-plan more often." Brianna grinned.

And then she came even closer and it suddenly was not just nerves and excitement- but a little bit of something else too. Normally she would've been the one to notice the guys, especially since some of them were probably regulars and she'd probably made them triple grande soy lattes with extra vanilla syrup in the past.
But her eyes were on one person, and one person only right now.
"Mmm, I should, now that I've found the right partner. Dating isn't exactly a solo activity."
Then the music changed, into a slower number, and the dancefloor started pairing off into couples. Kayla's hands wrapped around Brianna's waist.
"The inevitable slow dance." She commented, surprised at how electric even relatively minor contact felt.
no subject
"I wasn't a fan of slow dancing until just now. Must be the company." Brianna told her.
"A girl could get used to this..." she said quietly.
no subject
"A girl, could." Kayla replied a little distractedly, realizing just how close they were. By the time the dance ended, it was just a matter of a few inches and a slight tilt to avoid undesired nasal collision to softly, almost experimentally brush her lips aginst Brianna's.

Brianna's brain was working on overtime, so when the speaker across the room suddenly sputtered and then burned out with a puff of black smoke coming the back, there was some consternation from the other people in the cafe.
Brianna, on the other hand, couldn't be bothered to notice.
"Hey...look at that girl's clothes. They're...they're glowing!" shoulder a male patron.
"Oh gross! Not only are they deviants but one of them is a mutie!" yelled a female patron.
As reality comes crashing down upon our heroic couple ...
"So what if they are glowing?" A surprisingly burly man for a coffeeshop owner, he walked up to them.
Kayla looked at Brianna for a moment. "You all right?" Her hand went back to Brianna's, but reassuringly this time. "It'll be okay. Coffeeshop Bob doesn't like talk about deviants, and doesn't care whether people are mutants or not."
She offered Brianna a small smile. "And everyone knows the speakers were kinda on the edge of blowing out anyway." She nods.
Re: As reality comes crashing down upon our heroic couple ...
She took Kayla's hand in hers and watched as the owner went off on the patrons. As much as Brianna wanted to stay and watch it, she didn't want anyone to pick up on her being a mutant again.
"Hey...do you want to go home?" she whispered to Kayla.
Re: As reality comes crashing down upon our heroic couple ...
But leaving was a good idea. She didn't really want to create any problems for a man who'd, all things considered, been rather kind to hire her, despite knowing she came from the mutant school.
"Yeah. Going home would be good." She blushed slightly, thinking about just before the speaker blowing and the idiots starting talking. "C'mon, you. Homeward bound."
Re: As reality comes crashing down upon our heroic couple ...
"You're a great dancer. We'll do this again soon but maybe we can sneak into a club next time? Once I can make sure I don't blow up the speakers because my girlfriend is giving me the eyes." Brianna said.
Blink.
Did I just call her my--? Oh bloody hell.
"Not to say that you're my girlfriend because we haven't even talked about that. We're doing the slow thing. Forget I said anything." Brianna said, suddenly trying to babble her way backward from that leap of logic.
