Josephine hummed a tune to herself, some little archaic french nursery rhyme she'd learned from Papa, as she put the lid on the pot and left it to the final simmer. Now, for cleaning. it wasn't as though she was a messier cook than the norm, it was just that she tended to move in one long straight line throughout the whole process. From butchering, to washing veggies, to seasoning, etc etc... a large number of utensils and measuring implements left in her wake. She liked to hand wash everything, too. She knew there was a dishwasher, but it wasn't something she reflexively thought of.

She supposed the first step was to clean up the blood, before anyone else came into the kitchen.
Class had only been in session for a couple days at Xavier's. Labor Day had come and gone. There were more students on campus than in previous semesters. The buzz from first day jitters had settled down. Routines were starting to be picked up. It was currently the small span of time between the end of classes for the day and the beginning of after-school activities.

A mile from the main house, a very determined man wearing purple and dark blue was setting up. He took note of various things like the range to the target, wind direction, wind velocity, air density, elevation, and the Coriolis effect. As well as the effect the window he was going to shoot through would have on his very special bullet. He peered through his scope. This would be an extremely tricky shot, but the entire operation was waiting on him to start it. He needed to take out the biggest problem on that campus. The new construction getting into his way didn't help matters.

He eventually lined up a clear shot and waited. He caught a flash of red in the window. The target must have been sitting at her desk. The sniper grinned slightly to himself. He took in a breath, let it half out, and then squeezed the trigger.
The one-of-a-kind bullet made of non-magnetic material blasted out of the barrel of the sniper rifle. His aim was dead on. He quickly tapped the signal to have the first ones launch their attack.

The walls along Graymalkin Lane were breached explosively in multiple places. Most near security nodes to delay the time the security system roused. Men and women in black tabards with white crosses poured through the openings. They ran toward the buildings and any visible muties on the grounds. They all had been itching for some action since the debacle at Veridian Dynamics. Being underground for this long made the need for mutie blood strong among the Purifiers.
So, it had been made official. Jeremiah was going back to Avalon. He'd offered up and down for Josephine to come with her, including multiple assurances that his Mother and Father would be happy to have her live with them, but she'd politely declined. Avalon was his home, and his life, not hers. If this dimension was her home, for another day or for the rest of her life, she was going to have to really make it hers.

Of course, that left the concern of where to actually live. The city was expensive, and even though the very nice allowance from Not-Mama was probably still something she could count on, living alone didn't appeal to her, and she didn't have any friends close enough for her to imagine sharing a place with them.

So, she did what any homeless mutant in the know would do.

She called Xavier's.

Vesper was out on his nightly patrol. This time he actually had an area to look into as opposed to most nights. His enhanced hearing had caught him a tip the night before. One of the more careful and low key local gangs was looking into quietly bringing some drugs in from South America since a couple of other distributors had backed away from the trade. While Vesper was glad to stop some of the gangs, he always found more were willing to step up and take their place. Profit outweighed the stories about the man dressed like a bat.

The Brazilian vigilante was flying across the city toward a part of toward not known for gangs or the drug trade. There would likely be more innocent civilians there, so he was going to have to be a bit more careful. He looped carefully around to land on an apartment building's roof.

His wings folded in as he cast out his sense of hearing along the neighborhood. He tuned out couples arguing or having sex. He had overheard enough of that for ten lifetimes since he got these powers. He was looking for calm discussions. Especially ones with an undertone of bravado.
